An application for personalized healthcare for children and adolescents
In collaboration with the Julius-Maximilians-Universität in Würzburg, BioVariance GmbH developed the application Medicall, which supports doctors to determine the correct dosage of medications for children and adolescents. Medicall provides structured and user-friendly patient and literature data. This includes pharmacological data on side effects, their frequency, advices, half-life and clearance of a medication for age groups from 0 to 18 years.
Medicall relies on the data curation platform AiAspect, which provides information on current medical and scientific studies to doctors.
This application was developed according to the needs of children and adolescents, because their treatment, especially the dosage of medication, can be challenging. In general, the doctors’ decision regarding the medication of children and adolescents is mainly based on their own experience because drugs are usually tested and approved only for adults. Due to the lack of data and alternatives, patients aged from 0 to 18 years are treated with medicines that are insufficiently tested for their age. The threat of unexpected side effects, overdosing or underdosing, wrong medicines, allergies or an insufficient effectiveness of medicine are consequences of a so-called off-label use.
Another issue is the difficult and expensive research, development and approval of drugs for children. Companies are subjected to regulatory obstacles and social regulations, which usually prevent them from testing and launching medicines for children.
To avoid medical faulty treatment and medication errors, Medicall supports doctors to make an objective decision regarding the drug dosage. Drug safety increases in this age group and the therapeutic success is enhanced due to individual dosing and treatment.
